Construction Workers United (CWU) organizes and advocates for day laborers and low-wage immigrant workers in New York City’s construction industry. CWU is preparing the next generation of builders in NYC by delivering effective, culturally-competent health and safety training under Local Law 196, raising the wage floor for day laborers through negotiations with employers, operating a hiring hall for day laborers, preventing wage theft, and connecting the dots between workforce development and worker protections.

Workers Justice Project is approved by the Department of Buildings (DOB) to deliver courses to help you obtain a Worker Site Safety Training (SST) Card.
In order to obtain a Worker SST card with us, you must have the minimum 40 hour training requirements which include:
Completion of 30 Hours of OSHA Training
Completion of 2‑Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness Course
Completion of 8-Hour Fall Prevention Course

What is the 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness Course?
This course explains how drugs and alcohol affect the body and highlights the substance abuse risks commonly found in the construction industry especially in the workplace/site. As a participant, you will learn about the dangers and consequences of working under the influence, including the impact on safety and job performance. This course also provides practical steps workers can take to help maintain a safe, healthy, and drug-free workplace.
What is the 8-Hour Fall Prevention Course?
This course goes over the importance of preventing falls and why it is essential for maintaining overall safety in the construction industry. You will learn terms associated with falls in the construction industry and gain a better understanding of how fall-related accidents occur. This training also covers how to identify and analyze potential fall hazards on the job site and use that information to evaluate different working-at-height scenarios in order to make safer decisions and reduce the risk of injury.
In total, you will be receiving 10 hours of in DOB-approved courses

Please contact us if your Worker SST card is set to expire soon (in less than a year) OR if your card expired on or after May 3, 2026 as you can renew your card by taking DOB-approved courses which include:
4-Hour Fall Prevention
4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher (SST Only)
What is the 4-Hour Fall Prevention Course?
Similar to the 8-Hour Fall Prevention Course but in a more concise amount of time, this course highlights the importance of preventing falls and why it is essential for maintaining overall safety in the construction industry while covering how to identify and analyze potential fall hazards on the job site.
What is the 4-Hour Supported Scaffold User and Refresher (SST Only) Course?
This course provides the participants with the knowledge needed to recognize and prevent common safety hazards related to supported scaffold use. Participants will learn the importance of proper safety controls, the use of fall prevention and protective equipment, how to inspect scaffolds, and emergency plans to help maintain a safe work environment.
NOTE: This course will only be utilized as a necessary component to renew your SST card when completed alongside the 4-Hour Fall Prevention course mentioned above. This course will not be credited towards a Worker Wallet card nor will you receive a Worker Wallet card upon completing this course.
SST Worker Card Upon Completion
Upon completion of either pathway (10 hours or renewal) you will receive a new SST card at no additional cost. There is no payment needed to obtain your card upon completion of courses.
